Whereas, The Third Object of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍøis "To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth"; and
Whereas, Since the early part of 1990 the public has become increasingly aware that the incidence of measles has reached epidemic proportions and in a very short period of time the measles mortality rate has become unusually high; and
Whereas, It is expected that there will be an increasing incidence of mumps and rubella; and
Whereas, Measles, mumps and rubella are viral diseases with serious complications that can result in death for children and adults, and in miscarriage or spontaneous abortion in pregnant women; and
Whereas, Measles, mumps and rubella are preventable through vaccinations and the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Advisory Committee of Immunization Practices of the United States Department of Health and Human Services recommends vaccinations be given at age 15 months and at entry into kindergarten or junior high school; and
Whereas, A significant number of school children would require a "booster dose" vaccination at kindergarten or junior high school entry; and
Whereas, Many states require a single measles vaccination before a child enters the first grade and, with the funding currently available, public health agencies are only able to provide one vaccination at low cost; now therefore be it
Resolved, That the National ºÚÁϳԹÏÍøurge its constituent bodies to inform parents of the necessity for measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations and where necessary, provide the information to help families to obtain vaccinations locally for all children and youth; and be it further
Resolved, That the National ºÚÁϳԹÏÍøand the State PTAs continue to seek legislation that would require all children and youth receive the necessary measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations; and be it further
Resolved, That the National ºÚÁϳԹÏÍøand State PTAs continue to seek funding to enable public health agencies to provide low-cost or free measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations; and be it furtherÂ
Resolved, That the National ºÚÁϳԹÏÍøurge its constituent bodies to insist that school districts comply with the law requiring measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations.
